What kind of place do you want our Baths to be?

The City of Newcastle’s Stage 2 plans could change how generations experience the Baths — from open-air change rooms to cafés and licensed venues. Before the DA is lodged, it’s time to think about what makes the Baths special to you — and be ready to share that when public comments open.

What the Stage 2 Concept Plans Show

Council’s Stage 2 concept plans, released in 2024, already foreshadow major changes to how people will experience the Baths. Those plans include:

  • a large enclosed café space with potential for an alcohol licence,

  • roofed and enclosed change rooms, replacing the open-air design, and

  • a multi-use “community room” that could double as a private hire or function venue.

If these ideas remain in the final DA, they would significantly alter the open, communal and low-key character that generations of Novocastrians treasure.

When the DA Opens

As soon as the DA is exhibited, Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths Inc. will share clear, step-by-step instructions on how to make your submission. Even a short comment can make a difference.

Together, we achieved State Heritage listing. Now we must ensure that heritage — and the spirit of the place — are respected in Stage
