Stage 2 Plans Put Open-Air Change Rooms at Risk

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for your incredible support in helping to secure State Heritage Listing for the Newcastle Ocean Baths — a treasure that belongs to our whole community.

We will be needing your help again.

The City of Newcastle has confirmed it will lodge its multi-million-dollar application, most likely in November, for the next stage of redevelopment of the pavilion buildings. Council’s own website statements make clear that a roof over the change rooms is part of the proposed design. This means the future of the open-air change rooms — so loved by generations — is now at real risk.

Our community has said clearly that retaining the open-air change rooms is non-negotiable. These facilities protect health, support wellbeing, and embody the unique “salt, sand and sky” heritage of the Baths.

We will notify you as soon as the application (Development Application – DA) is exhibited for comment by Council. There is likely to be only a short period to respond and we will provide guidance on how to do so.

Stay alert for updates from Friends of Newcastle Ocean Baths Inc. and be ready to stand with us again.
